THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY:
To determine if a portion of outdoor air pollution, diesel exhaust and nitrogen
dioxide, directly causes irritation or inflammation in the lungs, according to
cells and biochemical substances (mediators) in the sputum. We also believe
that certain enzymes in the lungs affect the severity of the inflammation and
are produced according to our genes (material passed from parent to child
that determines the make-up of the body and mind). Results from this study
may increase the understanding of how air pollution can affect the function of
the lungs and body, in particular, in people with allergic asthma.
Screening Visit:
Brief visit which take about 4 hours. During this time you will receive a allergy
skin test (8 allergens on forearm), physical examination, breathing test, heart
tracing (ECG) and exercise test.
Exposure Sessions:
Once you are accepted into the study you will be required to be at the
laboratory at 7:30 ~ about 12 noon on each of the 3 exposure days. Each
exposure is 1 month apart. At each session you will have complete tests
(ECG, Pulmonary tests, & Various other test). One exposure is diesel exhaust
(no worse then sitting in traffic for 2 hours) while exercising on a stationary
bike in a special room (chamber) for 15 minutes every 30 minutes for 2 hours.
The other 2 exposures will be clean filtered air and nitrogen dioxide.
Day 2 ~ following day after Exposure Session:
You will be at the laboratory at 9:00 ~ 11:00 for follow up tests (ECG,
Pulmonary tests, & other tests.
